Boilie Preserving

Right heres the thing lads, i have been makin boilies for my local tackle shop for months now but i have only ever made freezerbaits and pop-ups.
I have relised that more and more people are buyin shelf-lifes , maybe because of the credit crunch as they are cheaper.
So i thought yes easy make some shelf lifes aswell
However when i got hold of the preserver i added the right amount to my mix after the flavours and sweetners had been added and in went my base mixes.
But, my mix didnt stick together it was all crumbly (N)

To put a long story short HOW DO I PRESERVE MY BAIT PROPERLY :'(

All answers will be greatly appreciated

Re: Boilie Preserving

Potassium sorbate should do the trick at a ratio of 5-10g per Kilo of mix

You may need to modify your mix slightly, increasing the flavour to mask the flavour added by the preservative.

It's also worth experimenting starting from the lowest amout of preservative possible as you dont want to overkill it as it makes the bait less digestable and can easily 'blow' a bait.

Yes they are difficult to find out about
Another question i was wondering about, the preservatives i have found boast about bieng food grade standard, am i wondering if i need this for fish ? because im sure i culd save a bundle if i could get hold of some non-food grade preserver

Re: Boilie Preserving

I'd be looking at food grade only mate.....i'd rather pay the bit extra and know im not going to cause any damage to fish.

This is one thing thats always puzzled me, what is non-food-grade used for?

Re: Boilie Preserving

Bi B non human consumption food grade product is normally used for animals like cattle pigs etc etc But it is definitely not used for dog food due to the risk of babies eating out of the dog or cat bowls on the floor.
PS I would only recommend you using Food grade product to ensure the carp that will scoff your great boilies are not harmed in any way. PS its a great USP to tell people the high quality ingredients.
