I think the answer is to use a good quality bait.

I don't think that freezing a poor bait makes it any better and there are good baits in both frozen and shelf life.

This is a common question and one that doesn't have a yes or no answer. There are many good quality shelf life baits and many bad freezer baits. Some shelf life baits are packed full of preservatives and some use human grade preservatives. You can never really be sure what goes in to them unless you make your own but even then you don't know the exact quantities of the ingredients within the base mix. There are top carp anglers who will just use shelf lifes and there are top carp anglers who would never use shelf life baits.

I do prefer shelf life but used to make my own, not very successfully I might add, but as there is so much info on the net re making your own and recipes I now feel confident that I will succeed.
