Re: Selection of main line

Hi Zebs, thanks for your nice comments re the site

It really depends largely on the venues your fishing and the typical size of the target fish. I normally load up on 12lb line but not a lot of the venues I fish are particularly snaggy and dont have mussels and things like that to shred your line. If the places you go have a lot of underwater snags it might be better to go for a heavier line such as 15lb or even 18lb but you have to bear in mind that the heavier you go with it the harder it is to tie good knots and tends to be more springy in exactly the same way as you'd experience when beefing up match fishing line.

Re: Selection of main line

Yep, you're spot on there. The three main types are flourocarbon, coated and uncoated. Beware though, some of these silk like materials can be an absolute pain in the backside to use, I bought one of these types a while back and it took me a little over an hour to tie a rig. The thing is you could always go with a coated braid and strip off the coating if required. I generally use either Fox Coretex or Suffix Stealthskin and if i want an uncoated hooklength just strip off the outer coating and it leaves a supple braid, plus ou could also strip off just a section to give a semi stiff rig.

Flourocarbon can be a pain to tie too as certain knots have a tendancy to slip, I tied a friend a few hair rigs with some IQ and one slipped and unfortunately he lost out on a nice 20 just over the landing net, as you can imagine my name was mud for about a month

Depends where you're fishing mate, if theres not much in the way of snags you can get away with 10-12lb but if theres snags i tend to use 15lb. Hope this helps.

Hi mate, if you're new to carp fishing i wouldn't bother with the braids for now, try just tying rigs using mono and when your experience increases and confidence grows you can move on to the more complex rig bits.

Keep things nice and simple and you will catch fish.

Hi all,
has anyone tried p-line floroclear as i have bought some, but have no reviews on it.

Hoping to get out tomorrow so will let you know how i get on as in the past i have only used mono, and any at the right price. The last i think was called zebro or summit?

Re: Selection of main line

murdoch64 P line is very abrasion resistant but it floats like a duck... Brilliant surface line when you fishing in lillys I must say

I used to use X-line but I stripped it off because the lakes I was fishing has alot of snags under the water and the x line would sink into the snags and I'd strike into a fish and have to deal with about 5 different roots and trees on the bottom before I connected with the fish... In clear bottomed lakes it's one of the best lines out there

I now use gardener GT80 and Nash Bullet Braid as my 2 mainlines - Both aren't to bad although you need to be careful with the braid for the first few session just to break it in, but now it's fine and it sinks better than a bag of kittens Happy day
