commercial to specimen setup help re'q

Hi All,

im new to both the forum and the world of specimen hunting i have fished commerical waters for several years using 10lb mainline with 7lb mono hair rig and all is fine,i want to upgrade to catching fish to 25lb + can someone tip me with regards to mainline strength and what hooklink strength i should use.
i have had a look through the anglers mail and most people are using 15lb mono to 25lb bottom i thought it was supposed to be bottom lighter thn mailine can you help with the confussion

hey daz.. most people tend to use a hair lenth material different to mono... myself i do tend to go a bit lighter on my end tackle not to deter fish away.... its all personal preference.. when u say you want to upgrade to you mean buying new tackle etc.. as i maybe able to help in that way all Carp Fishing Forums members get 10% off at my store... also have you tried any coaching this will improve your knowlege greatley and help u cathc those bigger fish.. i must be very predictable because my set up is 15lb main line and 25lb hooklink
the reason for fishing so heavy is simple, i might have to wait quite a while for a run and when i get it i simply don't want to loose it
the biggest change you'll go through from fishing commercials to chasing bigger carp is less runs, if you can cope with the lack of action and the blanks you'll be ok

hi guys thanks for your replies, just to let you know i am a competent angler and to date my largest fish is about 18lb that was caught on size 10 readymade 15" 7lb mono hair rigs to 10lb line my chosen quarry is carp to 30lb and cats in the lake go to 50lb+ so i just want to continue using my current methods but just wanted to check what mainline and hook link i should use im not thinking of going for the cats but they may show up simply do i use 15lb mainline with say 10lb braid or 15lb mainline with 20lb+braided hooklink advice greatly appreciated my rods are either 2.5lb tc or 2.75lb tc which should be fine i already use baitrunner reels so that is not a problem simply what line should i use........thanks in advance daz

If there are big cats present i would definatly use at least 15lb mainline and 25lb coated hooklink material, something like Pallatrax Steamlink or Snaglink. As for rods i personally would feel more comfortable with 2.75lb tc. These are just my opinions.

Also try alternative set up's such as a helicopter rig, or zig, you may find this work on the lakes you are fishing...
